We are excited to be a place of repair for all people. If you’ve been going through a hard season, distressed, discontent, or in debt, we welcome you. There really is no “ideal candidate” at Refuge. We have an eclectic mix of backgrounds, ages, and interests represented here. We truly hope to reach people who haven’t been to church in a while for various reasons or perhaps never before. If you’ve been hurt in the past, we hope you’ll give church another chance.
We have several attenders who never imagined themselves walking into a church again. They were able to come and listen without the pressure, guilt, or condemnation that makes people respond in fear. We have a vast array of ages from the very young to the seasoned. The average age is around 40, but that’s just a guess.
I think you’ll find Sunday morning to be both a comforting and challenging experience. It’s comforting to experience the true freedom of Jesus without legalism, man made rules, or drivenness. It’s challenging because we desire to be a group of people who truly apply what we hear. We don’t ever want to become a club for just “church people.” We want our lives to be personally transformed by God. And that’s our mission: “To lead people from a life of the same to a life of change through a growing relationship with Jesus.” Within this context, you’ll find true freedom, joy, and full meaning in life.
As far as what it’s like on a Sunday…we have coffee and donuts every Sunday. We start exactly at 10:30am. Some people sneak in right at 10:30 or a little after with just enough time to grab a coffee and sit down for service. Many people who aren’t comfortable with church don’t want to be bombarded. And we’re good with that. Usually we start off with some explanation about what we are going to do and how long it will last.
We have more modern music either through worship videos or a live band. Most people stand. Some sit. Some sing. Others just stand and drink coffee and take it all in. Our teaching is helpful to real life. For example, we started the first 5 weeks for 2015 talking about fear/anxiety/worry. It’s something everyone struggles with, and the Scriptures teach with clarity the solution to our fear. So, we like to talk about things that matter and connect with our everyday lives.
The building we meet in we lease for Sunday mornings only. 3509 Soldier’s Home Road. Look for the trailer out front that says Refuge Church. We are a non-denominational church, so the sign on the front of the building doesn’t apply to us.
If you have any more questions, please let us know and we would be happy to describe more about what we’re about and what to expect!
